All the images of Liberian
Refugees have been taken in the UNHCR refugees Camps and
Way Stations based in Sierra Leone.
During the 1990’s tens of thousands
of refugees fled from Sierra Leone to Liberia to escape the
civil war which was ravaging their country.
For 7 years, from 1989 to 1996, Liberia too had to endure
a brutal civil war: 150.000 people are estimated to have
died as up to 11 warring factions battled against each other
to gain the control of the country.
In July 1997 the country’s armed factions agreed to
hold a national election: the election of President Charles
Taylor signed the official end of the war.
During the 7 years virtually all of the country’s
3 million people fled their homes for periods ranging from
a few weeks to many years. More than 80% of those people
have already returned home, however since 1998, due to the
attacks
of several warring
factions to the capital Monrovia and to the Northern Lofa
County, several Liberians have decided not to go back home
as there’s still no reliable stability in their places
of origin. Furthermore many Liberians from the Lofa County
have since crossed the border to seek refuge in Sierra Leone:
the influx is still ongoing in 2003.
